EXP_3_FINAL SUBMISSION_MASHUP

This article, by Michael Mehaffy and Nikos Salingaros, originally appeared in Metropolis Mag as “Science for Designers: The Meaning of Complexity. http://www.archdaily.com/391794/designers-don-t-get-science-and-that-s-a-dangerous-thing/

Today’s designers seem to love using new ideas coming from science. Science, in particular, has profoundly influenced architects, informing their knowledge of materials, geometries, volumes and natural forms. The purpose of a scientific view of architecture is to generate startling new designs, and that means more satisfying design, more eternal forms, more valuable places, more beautiful buildings. Newer structures often have an obvious analog in elements of the natural sciences, For environmental designers and planners, knowing this phenomenon of “emergence” is the key to getting things right. In recent years, architects have also been called upon to devise new buildings, in which scientists will research, experiment, theorize, discuss, reevaluate and present findings. Some scientists shy away from the notion that nature “aims” for anything. . How architecture and science will define each other through this encounter is still to be seen, but it begins a dialogue that places architecture in a position to enable science to reach further into the unknown and come up with answers to life’s mysteries

my bridge is inspired by the Habitable bridge project which was shown in Shaowen's blog. after careful thinking, I seperated my architectural school into two main area-student area and teacher's area. The student area include computing lab, studio, work shop for student, student meeting place, and lecture theater; The teacher area include academic stuff office, general stuff office, research place for academic stuff, meeting place for stuff and work shop for stuff. I am going to create a connection between the student and teacher area and I decide to let this connect part be the library since in my understanding, library is the heart of a school and also represents knowledge which can be the connection between teacher and student.

EXP_2_17: The Overall Design Process For My Model

Here are the overall design process for my final model, it includes how  the model was developed. From top to bottom is from the first model to the final model, from left to right are: Overall view, Yakov Chernikov's monument, Weiss/Manfredi's monument., and the meeting space.

EXP_2_16: Developed Model With Light Applied On It

Here is the latest development on my model. In this design,  I use light to show different circulation people can have when they walk between two monuments- they can either walk on the straight  column or circular shape stairs.

EXP_2_15: Things that I am going to improve on my submission

I received Shaowen's email this evening and she pointed out some details that I can further develop on my model, and I'm going to do it now.

The details that I should develop are:
1. "The captured images are mostly too bright showing the prismatic cluster all lumped together. Should plan to apply textures onto certain area to highlight the 2 separate monuments."

2. "The relationship between built form and landform hasn't been further developed yet. Avoid the end result that the monumental cluster simply sits on the flat ground."

THEREFORE:
At first, the reason why my images were mostly too bright is because white was the only color I used in my model, in order to avoid it, I changed the texture color into orange and blue. As orange is warm color and blue is cold color, it provide a strong contract when people look at it.

The color used on Yakov Chernikov's monument is orange because his building is very powerful and orange, in my understanding, represents passion and power.

Blue is the color applied on Weiss/Manfredi's monument. As you can see in picture, the building is almost "invisible" and be "part of landscape". I got this idea from one of Weiss/Manfredi's very famous design project---Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center.

Secondly, in order to avoid the end result that the monumental cluster simply sits on the flat ground, I did some change on my landform design so that it is not just a flat land. I create a pond behind the meeting space in order to let the landform looks more interesting. Also, I tried to let Weiss/Manfredi's monument be rise- and - fall along undulating land form so that people inside the monument can get a feeling that be part of the environment.
